Language and cultural diffusion in intercultural communication: the positive and negative aspects
Abstract
This article deals with the questions of interpenetration of linguistic and cultural elements as a result of intercultural interaction. The content of the concept “cultural diffusion” is revealed in the cultural and linguocultural levels; its positive and negative aspects are characterized. The intercultural interference phenomena are analyzed on the lexical and discursive levels. The phenomena of linguistic integration in relation to coordinate bilingualism and interference in relation to subordinate bilingualism are illustrated.
Furthermore, the phenomenon of diffusion is considered from the perspective of language innovations. The role of diffusion in the language contamination during the interference stage is shown. Much attention is paid to the issues of formation and preservation of original Ukrainian culture, as well as to prospects for the development of the linguistic environment of Ukraine. The prospects of compulsory continuous and successive learning and teaching English in Ukraine in accordance with international standards are explored in connection with its rapid dissemination and use as a lingua franca. As a result, the task of forming a personality, capable of acting as a mediator of cultures, while remaining subject to native culture, is set.
